Practicing Root Cause Medicine in Ellicott City, MD

Have you experienced symptoms or medical problems which do not go away? Are your current doctors baffled at your medical issues, or dismiss your concerns? Tammy Jett-Parmer, PA-C practices root-cause medicine to uncover the reasons and solutions for your medical issues.

Root cause medicine is the practice of discovering what is at the root of a person’s difficulties with their health. This practice employs functional medicine principles.  Root cause medicine creates extended appointment times for a thorough and complete medical history, unique interpretation of standard testing, specialized functional testing (when appropriate), and the skills of a practiced clinician to reveal triggers in the past and present that may be leading to the current health challenges.  The root-cause investigation process yields a unique and complete picture of the individual and indicates a comprehensive and customized treatment plan. This also supports self-empowered and patient-directed decision making

Working without the limitations of the traditional doctor’s office appointment format, Tammy works with you using a number of modalities to investigate, test, and treat many conditions. “Root cause medicine” creates root cause resolution - diving deep into medical issues creates whole-body solutions rather than treatment of the symptoms.

You are given the time to discuss, decide, and treat those nagging symptoms - together.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is the process of restoring and maintaining hormone balance by providing hormones as close to identical as those produced by the human body.  This treatment has been available and used for decades and is considered safe and FDA approved for those without a personal or family history of cancer (especially breast and ovarian cancer).

Testosterone levels can begin to decline in the fourth decade of life for many women and men.  Perimenopause is that time in a woman’s life where the ovarian function begins to wane.  During this transition to menopause for women (and andropause for men, usually later in a man’s life), BHRT can support life interest and sex drive.

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is a naturally occurring point in a woman’s life when the ovaries become less active, and the menstrual cycle may begin to change.  This can happen as early as the 30s for some women, but it is most common to happen in the late 40s and early 50s.  Some women experience premenstrual syndrome (PMS) as a result of perimenopause. There can be shifts in mood, energy, menstrual bleeding, and length of the menstrual cycle.  Sometimes these changes can be so disruptive that they can affect normal functioning.  Some women have no physical or emotional issues during perimenopause.

Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s (autoimmune thyroiditis)

Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s (autoimmune thyroiditis) are two sometimes separate medical conditions whereby the function of the thyroid diminishes (hypothyroidism), and/or antibodies to the thyroid develop (autoimmune thyroiditis).  One can have autoimmune thyroiditis without hypothyroidism and vice-versa.  When the two conditions are occurring together, good practitioners typically take special attention to select thyroid replacement hormone that best decreases autoimmune reactions, as well as coaching dietary and lifestyle changes. Patients receive quality medical care at the same time as they co-create their own healthy lifestyle.

GI (Gastrointestinal) challenges

GI (Gastrointestinal) challenges are quite common with the Standard American Diet.  GI issues can manifest as reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome and irritable bowel disease, constipation, and unexplained diarrhea.  Practitioners help patients uncover the root cause of the GI issues, which can include food sensitivities, stress, low stomach acid, nutrient deficiencies, malabsorption, or other issues. Food intolerances and allergies can develop early or even at a later stage of a patient’s life.  Sometimes intolerances arise from intestinal permeability due to stress, poor eating habits, multiple courses of antibiotics, or other causes.

Integrative Medicine … We have the time.

Integrative Medicine combines traditional practices of diagnosing illness and prescribing medication with the expanded viewpoints of functional medicine, ultimately getting at the root cause of illness. Typically, an integrative practitioner spends 60 minutes with you on your first consultation, giving you the time and support to discuss all of your concerns.
